Challenge
Room layout is critical to the workflow in the space and location of other support equipment. Often people focus solely on the imaging system itself and forget about the other equipment and supplies necessary for the clinical procedures. Overhead coordination is also important, because an imaging system requires superstructures for support, which may pose conflicts for other equipment installations.
Success
Early planning efforts and vendor selection are key to project success. Designing rooms for a generic vendor can make it difficult to achieve proper workflow patterns and the inclusion of other support equipment. Through the development of key relationships with clinical support departments (i.e., Clinical Engineering, Information Systems, Materials Management), all support system equipment infrastructure can be included in the construction documents. Installation requirements and responsibilities are regularly reviewed at meetings with the contractor.
